Our Team

Joseph C. Howton MD, DMO, FACEP, FAAEM

Chief Executive Officer/Owner

 

Dr. Joe Howton is a Diving Medical Officer and board certified Emergency Physician with decades of hyperbaric experience both in the hospital and tunnel setting. He is a member of the Medical Advisory Panel for the Association of Diving Contractors International (ADCI). He has publications as sole author in the New England Journal of Medicine, Cecil's Textbook of Medicine, and many other textbooks and journals.  Dr. Howton has a particular interest in the management of the compressed air worker who may need simultaneous decompression and medical care. He has worked with CAMS since 2008, and became sole owner in November 2021 upon retirement of founder, Dr. William Spisak.

Gary Montgomery, MPAS, PA-C, DMO

Chief Operations Officer

 

With 25 years of military service, Mr. Montgomery brings a wealth of experience to CAMS. His journey began as a Hospital Corpsman in the US Navy, with deployments in elite units. Preceding his CAMS tenure, he served for a decade at the NOAA Diving Center (NDC) as the Diving Medical Officer (DMO) and Director, NOAA Diving Medicine. His responsibilities included overseeing various diving medicine courses, contributing to the NDC course catalog. Mr. Montgomery played a crucial role in providing medical support at dive sites and through the NOAA Diving Emergency Hotline. CAMS is thrilled to welcome him, anticipating the valuable expertise he adds to our team.

Matt Arnold, NBDHMT DMT, PCP-IV, DCBC Chamber Operator

Operations Manager/ Hyperbaric Specialist

 

Matt began his journey with CAMS in May 2022 as a hyperbaric paramedic and quickly moved into a management/consultation role. He began his career as a SCUBA instructor in 2003 and then became a surface-supplied commercial diver, DMT and chamber operator. He spent 7 years as a paramedic in one of the busiest ambulance services in North America and has spent the last 5 years working at the Environmental Medicine and Physiology unit at Simon Fraser University, Canada’s largest civilian Hyper / Hypobaric research center, becoming a lead in operations, safety and maintenance as well as a sessional instructor.
